Simple Solutions for Painful Post-Menopausal Sex

Q: Since I went through menopause a couple of years ago, I have had problems with vaginal lubrication. My sexual desire, if anything, is higher, but I still don't lubricate as much as I used to. Occasionally, this causes pain and irritation during intercourse. Any suggestions?
A: Lack of lubrication is a very common complaint of postmenopausal women. For some women, it is related to a decline in libido, but that doesn't seem to be the source of your problem. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) can be very helpful, especially if the treatment includes androgens in addition to estrogen or progesterone. You should consult your gynecologist about whether this might be appropriate for you.
However, if you are already on hormone replacement therapy, or prefer not to use hormones, the simplest solution is the use of a personal lubricant, such as K-Y Jelly, or AstroGlide. Stick with water-based products (oils can damage condoms) and don't consider household alternatives, which can cause irritation and yeast infections.
