Thyroid and Weight Management
If it's hard for you to shed unwanted pounds, it may be a good idea to ensure that your thyroid gland is in good working order. An underactive thyroid gland, also known as hypothyroidism, can cause weight gain or make it difficult to lose weight.
The American Thyroid Association estimates that one woman in 10 over the age of 65 has evidence of the earliest stages of hypothyroidism.
In his book, Is Your Thyroid Making You Fat: 28 Days to a Life-Changing Diagnosis (Warner Books), Sanford Siegal, M.D., says the blood test used to diagnose hypothyroidism isn't always accurate. His book provides a fast, easy program to find out if your thyroid is doing its job.
The American Thyroid Association says having the blood test is still worthwhile. For those who are planning to become pregnant or have a family history of thyroid problems, the test is important because hypothyroidism may impede conception and may cause miscarriage.
In most cases, daily thyroid-hormone supplementation can usually normalize thyroid functions.
