Eye Doctors See Benefits in Eggs

Boomers who have cut eggs from their diet should take another look for the sake of their eyes, medical experts say.
A spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmology says the antioxidants are key to the health of eye pigment and also can be found in green, leafy vegetables such as spinach -- along with corn, kiwi fruit, red seedless grapes and zucchini.
Researchers writing in Britain's Journal of Ophthalmology say egg yolks are the best source of lutein and zeaxanthin -- major antioxidants that have been shown to cut the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration.
Authors and researchers writing recently in the Journal of the American Medical Association agree with the British study A diet high in such antioxidants can reduce the incidence of macular degeneration by up to 43 percent, researchers suggest.
