Do you recommend visiting Trakai, Lithuania (and what should we do while we’re there)?
Yes, this Lithuanian city is indeed worth a visit!
The village and lake resort of Trakai, the medieval capital of Lithuania, was first established in the 13th century as a The Grand Duchy of Lithuania and today is one of the most popular attractions in the country. The castles of Trakai (yes, there are more than one!) are considered the best-known works of defensive architecture in Lithuania.
We traveled to Trakai in 2005 and visited the Trakai Island Castle, which contains the Museum of History and exposition of Applied Arts. While you’re there, be sure to take in a walk along the banks of the Lake Galve to the Uztrakis Park. You can catch a ride here from a restored medieval vessel and sail around the castle and islands.
When you plan your trip, book your tickets for the summer (aim for June and July, the summer music festival season -- we enjoyed the evening outdoor opera that takes place within the castle during our visit). Also, you can take an additional afternoon adventure by airboat to a nearby bog (one of the strangest events I have ever taken part in).
