Does the Shangri-La Diet Work?
Posted May 2, 2006 1:45 PM
Disclaimer: Unlike some other writers on the ThirdAge website and blog, I am not a diet or nutrition expert. Just a gal looking to lose a few pounds.
First of all, the Shangri-La diet it is not a diet - it's an idea and practice for how to reset our set points. And it is really just one thing, one habit, that we can add to whatever diet we choose (preferably a healthy one).
The blogosphere has been buzzing about Shangri-La and I have to admit I am intrigued. Kathy Sierra's post yesterday was the tipping point for me. I went and got the book and have decided to try Shangri-La starting today.
I won't go into the science or rationale of the diet - here's the website for Shangri-La creator and author, Seth Roberts. You can find lots of information there. Roberts' approach is different and focused more on tastes than calories.
The bottom line is this - there's only one thing I need to do starting today. I need to consume either a few tablespoons of tasteless oil or a liter of sugar water. Or a bit of both. The oil or sugar water needs to be ingested at least an hour before and after any other food (it's all I eat or drink for two hours except water). I am going to try the oil version. I had breakfast at 6am, so I will take my first dose (1.5 tablespoons) of light olive oil at about 10am. Then I will take another dose before bed.
That's it. That's the program. That's all there is to it. If you are interested, definitely get the book, though, because I have simplified the description a bit and you will need to determine the option (sugar or oil), dose and timing that fits your needs best.
According to Roberts, and several bloggers who have tried it (here's one guy's account), doing this one thing will lower my body's set point and reduce my appetite in a big way. We will see! My set point is the weight my body thinks it wants to be. If my set point is lower than my weight, I will not feel hungry. Here's the scary thing that really hit me. If you are hungry a lot, it likely means that your set point is HIGHER than your current weight and you body is doing everything it can to gain weight (again, simplified, but check out the description for yourself).
Have you gone Shangri-La? Let me know if it works for you.
I am doing this in conjunction with other positive changes I have been making including adding more whole grains, pom juice, fruits and veggies, water, green tea, and less refined sugar. I also have seen progress from adding a WaterRower to my exercise regimen.
Bigger updates=longer fun with Runescape ?
Let me get this straight here.
Jagex recently announced in their behind the scenes that for 4 week months, 2 updates will occur;one large and one small. And for the 5 week months, 3 updates, 1 big and 2 small, will be released. This seems to get rid of the usual(but not always) weekly update.

Dear Frank:
I want to start this diet ASAP, but i want to know when is the best time for taking the two spoons of Extra light olive oil.
Thank you for your time. I really appreciate your advice.
Lina
You are welcome. If it works well for you, drop back in and leave a comment.
Denise - that’s interesting. I don’t think that the oil is to be taken in place of a meal.
I surely would not take the oil in the place of a meal. BTW, how much are you taking? If you are still binging, you might want to take more.
Well, for the other side, visit http://www.oa.org/ -- a free support group.
Jonathon - While your point - calories in, calories out is correct - you are simplifying things just a bit. I agree that many want a secret pill that requires no work and that this is not likely a good long-term solution.
Our body is a system, and sometimes the system is out of alignment due to previous poor choices (like stress, yo-yo dieting, hormornal changes, etc). And for some with out-of-whack systems, the calories in and calories out model does not result in weight loss in the way that it might for you.
The thing that intrigues me about Shangri-La is that it appears to address certain systemic adjustment needs, which might be a good compliment for some people (compliment with healthy eating and exercise).
I have a question about the oil, could that be a problem for cholesterol?.......Thank you......
That's the thing about this diet that isn't really mentioned in the book - the need for inspiration. I honestly have not felt as un-hungry as Seth describes himself in the book. For me, there is so much psychology surrounding eating. The time of day or a negative self-thought are just a few triggers that are not erradicated because of a sip of oil or a cup of sugar water. I'm curious how other women have fared on this diet longterm - as the book examples are mostly men. Most women are prone to the occasional binge-fest and are unclear on how to adequately stave it off. Weight loss is a process on many different levels - I'm glad I've found a physiological aid with the oil and sugar, but there's just so much more to the equation.
Denies - that's interesting. I don't think that the oil is to be taken in place of a meal. You might want to ask about that or check that out in the book. I hope things turn around for you!
I have been taking the oil and drinking the sugar water for four days. I'm not sure it's working yet... every morning I drink the oil in place of breakfast. The first day I was ravenous by lunchtime. I was also hungry at dinnertime. On the 2nd day I was so hungry at lunchtime I binged on junk food. The 3rd day I wasn't hungry till about 2 pm, and the 4th day I was starving and couldn't stop snacking. I don't seem to be losing my appetite very much.
The diet is still working for me, here are some pictures:

Anne:
I would have to say that my experience is very similar to yours. I have noticed that a reduction of need for those in between snacks. Those calories add up!
I have been taking the oil for 5 days now. I have not noticed that I eat much less at meals but I have noticed that I don't get that nagging hunger that drives me to snack and binge. I usually have a terrible time with snacking at night. That seems to have gone away.
Well, I put it all together:
http://ethesis.blogspot.com/2006/06/shangri-la-diet-best-practices.html
Hope that helps.
JMW - Thanks for you input. It seem most people prefer the oil. Keep us informed on how your progress goes and I wish you the best! I have noticed that I am not eating quite as much at each meal. At the airport, I got a whole sandwich, but only ate 1/2.
I am a 32 year old woman. I have been incorporating oil and sugar water into my diet for the last 4 weeks. The first week I lost 0.6 lbs, week 2 - 1.6 lbs, and week 3 - 3.2 lbs. This week, however, I gained 3.2 lbs back. A net loss of 2.2 lbs in 4 weeks. I need to lose another 20lbs to be at the highest healthy BMI weight, so I am definitely not where I should be (and I'm not a super athlete that fits outside of the BMI scale). I feel less hungry if I use oil, and no difference if I use the sugar water. I am going to continue using the oil, but definitely need to carefully monitor my other food choices.
I was totally skeptical, but I've lost 1.4 lbs in six days. I'm eating WAY, way less than I used to and am not starving. If I get hungry, I grab a few carrots or wheat pretzel sticks (like 5 tops) and I'm fine til the next meal.
Still, I'm skeptical on if this will last or not.
And I did just sugar water for the first 4 days, the ELOO. And I've missed a few doses. Really it seems almost too easy. I'm also trying to eat healthier and am exercising a bit.
Krissy: I think 5 days is still a bit soon, but check out Stephen's journal (link above) too. As I understand it, there are just three things we need to get right - the timing, the dosage, and the product (oil with no taste or plain sugar).
People treat diets and weight like a test of virtue or will or the grace of God and the mandate of Heaven.
They aren't, they are just biology.
Reminds me of the story of Moses and the serpents. A lot of people died, rejecting the cure he offerred because it didn't make sense to them -- it did not matter that it worked.

I'm on day 5...this has definitely cut my cravings but...as to feeling full quickly I'm still not feelin' it...anyone have any insights?
Jerry - yes, the timing is the trick. Good luck! Share your progress with us. Mid morning and before I go to bed are the times that work for me.
Stephen - thanks for the link, I read your journal and the information is very helpful. I am going to post your link on my new post (today) too.
http://boards.sethroberts.net/index.php?topic=188.0 is where I'm running my personal story, that sub-division of the forums now has lots and lots of personal stories.
Sure wish you all the best.

I heard Roberts on talk radio and bought the book... bought the oil.. and am giving it a try.. It is difficult for me to find an hour after a meal and before I am going to eat that I can take the "remedy" .. We shall see..
So, I heard about this thing from a friend just yesterday and decided to try it. I really don't want to go out and buy the book; while it may well work I feel that it is a very sketchy (though all the while intriguing) experiment that doesn't seem to have a lot of support, especially from colleagues in the field of study.
I do have questions however: I am trying the sugar water deal, so i want to know: How many oz. are in a liter?
Does it have to be before you eat or after you eat any meal?
I usually eat breakfast, wait about an hour or so, and then i take the sugar water and wait about two hours before my next meal. Can you have the sugar water closer to your first meal, or does it have to be an hour after you eat?
how many times a day do you do have the sugar water?
hope to hear from someone! thanks!
Well, if you are taking the right oils, it will probably reduce your cholesterol, otherwise, weight loss tends to reduce it. Mine, at last check, was under 150.
BTW, for some people, taking the oil at night does not work well. I'm in the group of "some people" btw. For me, the best time is 10:00 or so in the morning. I know others whose best time is about 6:00 a.m. and others who take theirs about 3:00 in the afternoon (which I did while losing about 35 pounds) or at 8:00 p.m. (which I have not tried).
Get into a routine, if it works, continue it. If it does not, change it. Do not change more than once a week and give your body at least a week to learn how to digest the oil (and do not change oils all the time. Most people take about a week for their body to adjust to an oil and it just does not work as well for them until they adjust to it).
ELOO (extra light olive oil) and walnut oil (expeller type -- which is flavorles) are the two leading favorites, with other types making strong showings. I don't think the type of oil really matters.
JMW - Congrats on your progress. You note came at a great time for me. I needed the inspiration!
Here's an update to my May 11 posting. I have since lost an additional 5.2 lbs - bringing my total weight loss to 7.4 lbs in 6 weeks. 15 lbs to go to a healthy BMI number. My hunger is more controllable and I eat less. I find when I eat what I used to eat, I am so full that it's painful.
Hi Lisa...I was surfing around on the web on Wednesday or Thursday and read lots about this "program." I am a back-sliding Weight Watcher (Core Plan)...I lost 56# from 1/28/05 through the New Year, and just completely fell apart during the winter months this year (a combination of laziness, Seasonal Affective Disorder and feeling hungry all the time). So, I am sooo ready to get my mojo back! I ordered the book on Thursday, and even without it, I'll start the oil dosing today. My sons (13 and 14) are starting the Boy Scout Personal Fitness meritbadge this week with my husband (a sort of twelve week cardio/strength plan with record keeping and progree logs). I'm going to join them and just get out of my "poor me" rut. I'll read your entries with interest, and let you know how things go here! Best, Suzanne
Josephine - check out the link Stephen provided on comment 24. Ask Seth the same questions. It owuld be interesting to get his opinion.
Since oil only tastes because you can smell it what's wrong with drinking flax oil for example and holding your nose.
And what about agave as a sugar source, doesn't taste like anything. I drank the sugar water and it burnt my tongue since I haven't eaten sugar for awhile.
nin ... Seth Roberts is available at his web site and actually answers questions in depth.
The book is very easy to follow, one of the good things about it.
Lisa,
You may want to try the "midnight oil" method -- drinking the oil in the middle of the night. It works very well for some people. It did not for me, but if it works for you it is a great way to solve a lot of schedule problems.
OK, Lisa, you've got me. I can't lose anything (but pounds) by trying this for a week. So I'm on, starting tomorrow. I'd love to hear your progress after a week, though!
Krissy:
In his book, Roberts say that most notice a decrease in appetite by the end of the first week. I am on day 4 and it might be starting to lessen, but I look forward to feeling the massive descrease he reports that most have.
I just started today. My appetite has not decreased. I am a small person that needs to lose just 8-10 lbs. But I am always hungry and since the birth of my children my appetite seems bottomless. (my last pregnancy was 5 years ago so it's not like I'm still transitioning) Anyway, if I felt full faster it would go a long way in helping me get the weight off. Anyone have advice on how long before they started to feel full on the plan?
I also want to know waht is the best time to drink the oil..... Thank you..
Stephen - Thanks for continuing to update and educate us - you are an inspiration!
I do have questions however: I am trying the sugar water deal, so i want to know: How many oz. are in a liter? A liter ~ a quart. Which is why all the two quart bottles of pop in the USA have been replaced by 2 liter bottles (a liter is a tad larger).
Jonathon Winkleman ... ah, but if you have any real life experience you know that in a normal "eat less" routine at some point your metabolism shuts off and the weight loss pretty much stops.
Anyway, I was down 62 pounds this morning. I'm so pleased. I've been on this since November and expect I'll just keep on it for the rest of my life.
Stephen: Wow - congratulations! I am bouyed by your success heading into day 4.
i'm really inspired by you stephen...im going to buy the book tom! i hope i will be able to follow the book. although i havent read it, reading your blog, i guess its like trial and error? i hope i will have enough patience to try and try till i find how much i should drink. i hope if i have questions you can guide me through it! pls? im desperate :) thanks!
The problem with the "traditional" remedies is that they don't work. I'm fifty years old and tried a lot of the traditional wisdom. It failed me as it fails 98%+ of the population that relies on it.
On the other hand, I started the Shangri-la diet November 13 and I've lost 52 pounds so far.
That is a big difference.
Jonathon:
While your, er, PASSIONATE commment is interesting, I think you're missing the point of this particular method (which I've not tried but it's deeply intriguing).
The theory here, as I see it, isn't simply that you'll consume fewer calories and then lose weight. You're correct that more calories burned than taken in will result in weight lose. It's the cornerstone to any diet. But this method proposes something larger than that: that you will reset your 'set point' at which your body will feel sated. Your body feels fuller on fewer calories, making it far easier to lose weight.
The key here is to get your body to feel full sooner and if this diet indeed accomplishes that, it's a fairly radical discovery. But hey, if having a piece of fruit for dinner works for you, more power to you.
Lisa, like any other fad or temporary fix the problem will still be there when the diet is over. I like that you are incorportaing other positive more conventional remedies. I exercise but don't pay close attention to portion control or food ingredient content so I'm not doing what I believe would work long term just yet. I keep falling victim to the emotional eating, eating away my frustrations rather than eating to live. Best of luck to you on your effort to be healthy through diet and exercise.
Frank: Thanks - I agree that a fad is no solution for health. The idea of changing my set point is intersting, though, and that's really why I am giving this a whirl.
Roberts says that Shangri-La helps with emotional eating in the respect that it makes you not want to eat much at all. We shall see!
