One Shot

I saw the video '8 Mile' the other day. It's an interesting movie that ends with an interesting song called Lose Yourself by Eminem. It's a good rap song with the obligatory amount of profanity and some impressive bursts of reflective thought.

One part of the song goes as follows:
"You only get one shot, do not miss your chance to blow
This opportunity comes once in a lifetime yo."

I have two issues with these lyrics. First, you don't only get one shot. You get lots of shots, if you play it right. Second, what's up with 'yo'? Can you just make up sounds to get a rhyme in rap?

How can a modern messenger have such an outdated message? Nobody works their whole life in one job. Nobody is only one thing. Nobody has only one relationship. Nobody wants only one thing in their life or even has only one shot at achieving anything. There are lots of opportunities arising every day. What's with this one-dimensional, one-shot perspective of a multi-faceted, ever-changing world?

If Eminem gave me a call, I'd suggest some different lyrics for these lines in his song. How about:
"You get lots of shots, if you stay in the game today
Endless opportunity waits for those who take it and make it, hey"

Or maybe,
"This one shot is hooey, you're making too much pressure,
What you want, make it so, life is not a guess, sure"

One more:
"Brutal life, fabulous life, it's you that wears the pants,
It's the chance of a lifetime in a lifetime of chance"

I don't think I'll quit my day job...

You get one chance. Eminem wrote that song about a real situation. He likely only had one chance to rise that far in the competition at the age he was with the energy and appeal he had and he made it. His performance in the competition was inspired and believe it, dude, he had a teeny teeny chance of ever even getting high enough in the competiton to be in the finals. His other chances were more along the lines of bleak shit.

Bob Dylan had only once chance to write "Blowin' in the Wind" and have it become such a standard. Again, Age, inspiration, the publicity macghine he stumbled into, noot to mentomn the creative inspiration which has it's own timetable. there are fabulous artists in this world who have only a work here and there or even one ever of any significance.

Life is short, even for a George Burns type of cat. He always went for the moment.

Bill Gates had one chance to come up with the OS before another was taken for an initial run and history changed. You get one chance to do what is right in front of you.

I guess it is true that the finite details of any single life event only drift by once. But life isn't about any one specific moment. It is about the expression of talents and the pursuit of personal interests. Eminem was going to move people with his capabilities, even if his work didn't burst into the pop spotlight. Bob Dylan's insights in Blowing in the Wind don't go away if the whole world doesn't hear them.

I get that specific moments can amplify the finance and fame of a person's life work. However, it has always seemed wiser to me to view a person's life from the perspective of that individual rather than from the comparative scope of success associated with any single life event. This is particularly important for the also-talented majority for whom it did not all come together in some one shot moment in time. Each person must know there is always tomorrow. As long as you are living, there's always another shot.

You made me laugh. But, you might have something there, if you're a middle aged rapper. I think the young people would have a fit if the new trend is middle aged rappers. Naw....keep the day job.
I wonder if Eminem would write the same lyrics today - now that he is older.
