The Single Most Important Thing
Posted February 5, 2007 12:00 PM
If anyone asked me what was the single most important thing I have done over the span of my life to stay young, healthy and fit, I would have to say exercise. For over thirty years I have exercised at least thirty minutes every day. Now I would never say that just exercising thirty minutes a day is all it takes to stay young and fit, however years of research and mounting scientific evidence about the merits of exercise, now point to exercise as being essential in slowing down the aging process. Of course genetics and a little luck go a long way in helping us retain our youth, but for most of us living a healthy lifestyle, which includes exercise and a good diet, are the cornerstones of health and fitness.
What would I recommend as an exercise program? Well it would include flexibly, balance, and strength exercises, combined with cardiovascular exercise. Scientific studies now show that just thirty minutes a day of exercise is all it takes. So if you alternate between a class that incorporates flexibility, stretching, balance and strength training with a day of cardiovascular exercise for thirty minutes, six days a weeks, you will not only keep your body fit but also improve your cognitive functioning.
I developed my exercise program, Doctor Lynn’s Anti-Aging Workout for Every Body, as a program that combines flexibility, balance, strength training and relaxation, all in one easy 40 minute exercise class. Since flexibility is so important to staying fit, next week I’m going to focus on flexibility as an important part of an exercise regiment. I’ll share with you some tips and easy ways to stay flexible in body and mind.
Doctor Lynn
I started a regular exercise routine in 1995-12 years later, I am still at it (walking with dogs 2-3 miles per day) yes, in terms of health, it has been wonderful BUT I walk for sanity since I have had a number of death events over the past 5 years-and these walks are necessary for my mental health-so much better than prescription drugs!! I can be obsessive, anxious, but am able to maintain my sanity with the "daily constitution"

frank, i'm glad you mentioned "healthy selfish attitude'. i think it is an important thing to instill in people because for so many of us people pleasers - taking care of other's wants/needs takes precedence over our own choices. that was my greatest challenge in justifying my own exercise regimine. as i have aged it has also become and excuse because it just isn't as easy now to do for my body what it requires to be fit.
I couldn't agree more with you regarding exercising every day; I am 54 now and have exercised basically daily since my late 20's (with a a few days off here and there for illness)and I know I'm younger physically than all my friends. I hear their complaints about aches and pains, blood pressure problems, overweight, etc. Not me! I can honestly say I have none of those problems and it's because I exercise daily. Walk, bike, a video, stretch, whatever - Just do It!!
The most important way to combat aging, Stay out of the sun, then your skin won't look like leather. don't smoke, and you won't have wrinkles. drink moderately, and make sure you have a great sex life. A happy attitude dosen't hurt either.
I decisively agree with Lynn.
I don't leave bed without exercising, in addition I swim six times a week.
Dr. Lynn, You are wise to have stayed focused, and disciplined regarding exercise and diet. I'm sure you are not only outwardly attractive but more importantly able to enjoy a better quality of life as a result of your routine. I agree with everything you said but think there needs to be something established in each of us that allows such a lifestyle of good health. That one thing would be a clear mind, or healthy selfish attitude of taking caring of yourself. I mean that in a good way because too often people know what the healthy thing to do would be, but neglect themselves for what they think is some greater mission. I've argued with my wife for years to exercise on a regular basis, not so that I would have some shapely babe as my wife but so that I would have a healthy and more fit partner to share my life. The "One Thing" you mentioned is great, I just think the mindset to do it is key. We cannot expect something good to come from a life of physical and nutritional neglect.
