General Discussion: Diet Support Group

Instead of laying out large sums of money to lose weight, who would not rather have a member support group? We could share ideas, encourage one another, and have weekly weigh-ins. There are probably many like myself who yo-yo diet (not good) but haven't found a solution yet. When we get serious about dieting, there is no one to turn to except some national program which costs money. I can't afford that. I'm a 68-year-old male who would like to lose 20 pounds. But is it ever so hard!! I walk daily but can't get past those 1/2 gallon ice cream sales.

Count Cholesterol

Seventy percent of your cholesterol comes from that which you yourself manufacture, mostly in the liver; only one-third comes directly from the diet. This is why a low-cholesterol diet is not as important as a cholesterol-lowering diet.

Know When to Eat

When you eat is just as important as what and how you eat. The standard American meal pattern consists of a cup of coffee for breakfast, a sandwich and a soda for lunch, and then a mound of food for dinner. This gorging meal pattern would do a lion proud, but is it right for you?

Water

OK, since you don't eat it, it's not really a "food," but what you drink can also affect your disposition. What Not to Eat

The No. 1 foods to avoid? "Anything that is deep-fried," says nutrition director Marlene Lesson, M.S., R.D. "Also, foods containing hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated oils are the enemy. These include margarine, pastries, packaged cookies, crackers, potato chips and other snack foods." Other foods to give up include cheese and other dairy products, poultry skin (remove it... Eat Your Fish

A diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids may protect the brain from Alzheimer's. Eat more fatty fish such as salmon, halibut, sardines and tuna, and shop for omega-3 enriched eggs. If you can't get enough fish into your diet, consider taking at least one gram a day of a fish oil supplement. ... View slideshow >>
