The Straight Dope on Acne

While it's generally perceived as an adolescent condition, acne can strike in midlife and beyond. What's more, says Dr. Tony Chu, head of dermatology at Imperial College, London, "few conditions are subject to more myths or misinformation."

For instance, the myth that chocolate causes acne or other spots on the skin is "the most ridiculous misconception," says Dr. Chu. He also refutes myths including: too much, or too little, sex can cause an acne outbreak, and a lack of exercise causes breakouts.

Dr. Chu notes that "the key ingredients in managing acne are vitamin A derivatives such as retinol and antibacterial agents that reduce inflammation." These substances are available by prescription.

It's a good idea to see a dermatologist if you're prone to skin flare-ups. Retinol and other skin products will not bring changes overnight: give the treatments four to six weeks to start working.
