Take Your Sex Life to Your Doc

Women are shy. At least when it comes to discussing their sex lives with their doctors.

Almost all women have concerns about their sex lives, but many are reluctant to broach the subject with their MDs, according to a survey in the Journal of Family Practice. Nearly 99 percent of women visiting the doctor for a routine gynecological exam named a sexual concern.

Lack of sexual desire was the top issue reported in the survey, with 87 percent of those polled expressing concerns about low libido, followed by 83 percent claiming orgasm difficulties, and 75 percent suffering from inadequate lubrication.

Other concerns included painful intercourse (71 percent), unmet sexual needs (67 percent), body image concerns (66 percent), and a lack of information on sexual issues (63 percent).

Questionnaires were mailed to 1,480 women associated with a military medical center who were active-duty service members, active military reserve, retired military members, their families, and eligible employed or retired civilian service members.

"Sexuality is an integral part of health, quality of life, and general well-being. Primary care physicians should be trained and prepared to address these sexual concerns," said Margaret Nusbaum of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who conducted the survey with colleagues.

So, ladies, next time you're due for an appointment, bite the bullet and ask about your concerns! You're not alone!
