Hunting for a Memory Elixir

In its search for substances to combat aging and maintain health [1] intensifies, the British firm Phytopharm [2] says its latest discovery -- called P58 for now -- could be a key in reversing memory decline.

Phytopharm won't say much about P58, other than it is extracted from a plant common in Asia. But reports indicate tests on laboratory animals with the substance show that memory can be restored -- a result that could prove vital in Alzheimer's research. Phytopharm is now planning a series of clinical tests.

Company executive Dr. Richard Dixey says "I can't claim that it is the elixir of life, but our work [3] in animals is compelling. We now have the exciting prospect of a drug which may work [3] in all forms of dementia and also in reversing age-related memory decline, which affects everyone over 40."

Industry observers suggest such a product could be on the market in the early years of the new millennium. It would offer hope for improved memory in middle age and beyond, as well as the possibility of helping victims of degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's.
