Are You a Savvy Patient?
Do you want to make the most of the time you spend in the doctor's office? Some responsibility falls on the patient. Here are some suggestions
to help you make the most of your visit:
- Keep a daily log of how you feel. This is especially important if you've started a new medication or treatment, and it can help you remember your symptoms. The information will help your doctor adjust your medication or make a diagnosis.
- Write down your questions and concerns ahead of time. Having a list makes it easier to review them with your doctor.
- Take notes on important points during your appointment. Either bring a pen and notepad to take notes when you talk to your doctor, or bring a tape recorder to record your appointment.
- Never be afraid to ask questions. Ask your doctor to clarify medical terminology you don't understand, repeat things if necessary, and supply information in writing. Be sure you know the reasons for tests and procedures--and if you don't, ask.
- Confirm the doctor's key instructions before leaving. Ask the doctor to summarize the visit to be certain you didn't miss any crucial points.
- Ask your doctor if he or she can perform a Geriatric Assessment. A Geriatric Assessment is a screening process for older people designed to identify and quantify an older person's medical, psychological, and functional capabilities. It is much more comprehensive than a routine history and physical exam.
The team that performs the assessment usually includes a doctor, nurse, and social worker and may also include other specialists and therapists. The team performs a thorough examination to learn about the patient's physical and mental health, home safety, preventive healthcare, family life, income, living arrangements, access to community services, caregiver needs, and ability to perform daily tasks.
The team diagnoses health problems and develops a plan to help older people get the healthcare and social services they need. The ultimate goal of the assessment is to promote an independent, safe, and healthy lifestyle for older patients.
