Q:

My husband was recently diagnosed with depression, but it took over a year to convince him he had a problem. Is this denial common in men?

A:

A "suck-it-up" culture means men often languish with depression. Recent research that I conducted on gender and depression shows that male depression tends to be under-diagnosed and under-reported. Further men tend to "act out" their depression through irritability and anger, and so don’t appear depressed. As a result millions of men kill themselves each year who could be saved if we recognized that their irritability and anger were marks of depression not just "typical grumpy old male" syndrome.
