Q & A: What's Causing My Hair to Break?
Posted August 27, 2007 3:38 PM

QUESTION: I have a lot of short, broken hairs at my hairline. What could be causing them?
ANSWER: Sometimes short hairs at your hairline are simply new hairs growing in. But if you have noticed that the problem is consistent, or seems to be getting worse, they could very well be hairs that are breaking off. Here, several possible causes:
- The most common cause is wearing a tight ponytail too often. Because a tight ponytail pulls your hair so forcefully, it can literally cause strands to snap. To reduce breakage, wear loose ponies and use an elastic with no metal to secure them. Give your hair a break from ponytails often, and be sure to sleep with your hair loose, not tied up.
- Chemical processes can also be to blame. Many women have highlights concentrated around their face. The bleach and peroxide used to create highlights can deplete moisture, weaken hair and make it break more easily. Be sure you have highlights done by a trained colorist, and use a rich conditioner every day to add back moisture.
- Finally, vigorous brushing could be the culprit. Too-hard brushing can tear hair much like wearing it in a tight ponytail. Be sure to use a gentle hand when brushing hair. And never brush wet hair -- it's more pliable and likely to break.
