Great Style! Is It You?

So you've seen a great new hairstyle in one of the slick magazines and are convinced it is, well, just you. But is it? Beyond that photo, says top London stylist Nicky Clarke, there's a heap of questions, such as will it work with your hair, does it suit you, and how much maintenance is involved?

First off, says Clarke, a consultation with your stylist is vital -- and "try to take in several photos, not just one" -- and particularly take along any picture you think shows what you are after. "This gives the stylist a clearer idea of the feel you are after -- maybe you like the cut of one style and the swing of another."

It is also important that you find a stylist whom you really feel is on your side, "so that you feel comfortable showing them pictures and making suggestions without worrying that they will take offense because you don't give them carte blanche." But if you feel your stylist's ego is getting between you and what you want, "it's time to look elsewhere."

At the end of the day, remember, there is just so much that a stylist can do to make your dream of yourself come true. "Getting your hair cut like Catherine Deneuve won't turn you into her," says Clarke -- besides which, she goes to the hairdresser every day.
