Avoiding Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis runs in my family. My mother has it, and I'm worried that I'm headed down the same road simply because of genetics. I've read that weight-bearing exercise helps maintain bone mass. What weight-bearing exercise do you do? And how do you keep it interesting, so you don't get bored when working out?
