Apple a Day Keeps the Brain Alert

An apple a day could keep memory loss at bay, researchers claim.
A study found that eating two to four apples daily can guard against cell damage in the brain, which leads to forgetfulness in old age.
Previous research has suggested that the fruit can protect those who are prone to developing Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia.
Now, scientists say apples can keep people mentally sharp because they contain high levels of antioxidants.
Dr. Thomas B Shea, of the University of Massachusetts, said: "There is something in apples and apple juice that protects brain cells in normal aging. The study suggests that eating and drinking apples and apple juice, in conjunction with a balanced diet, can protect the brain from the effects of oxidative stress cell damage that contribute to memory loss and that we should eat such antioxidant-rich foods."
[In the study,] adult mice and aged mice were fed a standard diet, a diet deficient of nutrients, or a nutrient-deficient diet supplemented with apple juice.
