Whole Grains Aid Longevity Battle
Healthy longevity means battling off disease, and whole grain foods may be key weapons against most cancers, researchers say.
Writing in the International Journal of Cancer, Italian scientists who looked at more than 18,000 patients treated for cancer and non-cancerous ailments found that a "high intake of whole grain foods consistently reduced risk of (cancer)...except for thyroid."
While the researchers remain baffled as to how the whole grains work against cancer development, they speculate that "frequent hole grain consumption simply implies a lower intake of refined grains, which have been associated with elevated risk of colorectal, breast, and perhaps other cancer sites."
There's also the possibility, they say, that whole grains may reduce risks of cancer development in the digestive tract because of their higher insoluble and soluble fiber content, allowing them to pass through the body more quickly.
