In the halcyon days of childhood, when the horizon of possibilities seemed eternal, we all dreamed about and talked about what we would be when we grew up: firemen and baseball players, ballerinas and Broadway actresses, famous writers and inventors.
Now, imagine, for a moment, you could do it all over again. What would you be? We haven't forgotten the dreams, and some of them never faded, a new nationwide poll of adults shows.
In the Zogby/Reaters poll of 1,205 adults, "world-famous writer" and "inventor" topped the list of choices of dream careers, each garnering 26 percent of the votes.
Another 12.5 percent fancied themselves designing buildings as architects. Rock 'n' roll fantasies would not fade away for others -- about 11 percent said they'd like to be a popular songwriter.
The lights of Broadway fired the imagination of 10 percent of respondents. Others traveled in their mind's eye to studios, as 8.1 percent picked artist. Is it any surprise supply exceeds demand for all these dream jobs?
