Stick With Hormone Therapy

A Yale University professor estimates only about 10 percent of post-menopausal women use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for two years or more. Dr. Philip Sarrel says the longer it's used, the better the long-term bone and cardiovascular benefits.

In a New Menopause Survey, Sarrel polled more than 200 menopausal women to determine why they take HRT. About three out of four use HRT to control symptoms and prevent osteoporosis, 55 percent to prevent heart disease.

Sarrel says, "maintaining one's sex life is a high priority for using HRT for over 40 percent of the women who use it." Forty-one percent cited maintaining sexual function as one reason they use HRT.

While most women are aware of the need to replace estrogen, fewer are familiar with androgen replacement. In adult women, androgens have long been known to play a key role in sexuality.
