Scripture According to Andy Griffith?

Holy Writ according to Andy Griffith? The Twickenham Church of Christ in Huntsville, Ala., has developed a Bible study program, using old episodes of The Andy Griffith TV Show to examine family values and morality. They're sharing their lesson plans with the rest of us on the Internet, at BarneyFife.com.

"Finding the Way Back to Mayberry," which began last summer as a small group meeting on Wednesday nights, has grown increasingly popular and now attracts hundreds of people each week and even more on the Web site. Each class begins with the showing of an episode of the show, followed by discussion of the Biblical values portrayed by Andy, Barney, and yes, even Gomer.

The Web site teacher says, "I firmly believe The Andy Griffith Show is so popular today because it represents a time and a place that many of us long for. A time when the pace of life was slower and attention was paid to the small details found in every day pleasures of life -- and a place where people genuinely cared about one another and where basic morals and ideals were a way of life."

While direct religious references were few in the original TV show, the site uses the series to look at the basic moral principles.
