Dust mites -- which die in the winter -- are very difficult to get out of bedding, upholstered furniture and carpet. When you look at a shaft of sunlight, chances are what you see floating in the air are dead mites and their waste products -- major causes of allergies and asthma.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases says you can create a dust-free bedroom with a little care and planning. Carpet and rugs make dust control impossible so if you can, replace such items with hardwood, tile or linoleum flooring.
Keep box springs and mattresses encased in a zippered plastic allergen-proof cover. Keep pets with fur or feathers out of the room and keep furniture to a minimum. Bedrooms should be cleaned thoroughly once a week, including washing down the doors and windows. Sheets, blankets, bedclothes and curtains should be washed weekly in hot water and it would help to install an air filter in the room to remove allergens.
