A Question of Existence
Life: a bewildering array of random events? Or is there more to existence than meets the eye? The answers to those eternal questions were the obsession of theologian Emanuel Swedenborg.
The Swedenborg Lending Library and Enquiry Centre attempts to define the life of the 18th-Century nobleman who abandoned a brilliant scientific career to devote his life to the "questions of life" -- and developed a theological system in the process.
Based on three concepts -- the divinity of Christ, divine inspiration of the Word and a life of charity -- Swedenborg's system insisted that to accept the truth of any proposition, an individual must use cool reason and judgment -- unbiased rational appraisal.
His propositions tend to be current regardless of the scientific fad of the moment. If properly analyzed, they are linked closely to recognizing the value of scientific achievement.
