Menopause Woes: The Kava Kava Approach

Researchers don't know how the beverage and extract kava kava works to reduce anxiety in menopausal women. But supporters say it's helped Pacific Islander women for centuries.

Sold in the United States as an dietary supplement, kava kava is used in Europe to treat anxiety and insomnia. It has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for menopause-related problems.

But the iHerb Web site says one study involving menopausal women indicated that levels of 100 milligrams of kava kava reduced anxiety and hot flashes while improving a general feeling of well being.

The supplement does not impair mental functioning, a site spokesman says. Recommended doses for the supplement form is between 45 and 70 milligrams three times daily for insomnia, the recommended dosages are between 180 and 210 milligrams before bedtime.
