The Kitchen's In Launch Control

Looking for a home that's really a shelter from the storm -- or whatever? 20th Century Castles where they're offering a range of decommissioned missile sites as residences or offices.

In Carlton, Kan., for example, there's an 18.5-acre Atlas site available for mere $69,500. The buyer gets a launch control center with full stairs and concrete floors, a missile silo with some of the structure still hanging, and the whole spread surrounded by the original high chain-link fence.

At Shep, Texas, you can pick up an 11-acre Atlas ICBM site for $173,000 -- and it comes with a silo launch tube that 20th Century Castles says would be ideal for scuba diving. Other sites across the United States come with Quonset buildings, but few, if any, offer much in the way of architectural imagination.

The 8.6-acre site at Hobart, Okla., with its sturdy bunker, went for $59,500 dollars. 20th Century Castles says it still has 18 of these prospective homes for sale -- and they're going fast.
