Keeping the Family Vision Bright

Sunday, Sept. 13, is Grandparents Day -- and with a little foresight you can help an aged friend or relative keep their eyes bright and healthy.

The National Eye Care Project (NECP) suggests making an appointment for your favorite mature adult for an examination. Experts say one in three Americans over the age of 65 has some eye disorder that threatens their vision.

NECP chairman Dr. B. Thomas Hutchinson says too many mature adults "avoid eye care because they think that worsening vision is just part of aging, or they worry about finances, or don't know where to go for help," warns Dr. B. Thomas Hutchinson, chair of the NECP.

Early treatment can significantly reduce the incidence of glaucoma, cataracts and other disorders of the eye. Seniors and other mature adults, "can -- and should -- keep their sight for life," Hutchinson says.
