Job Frustration Harmful

Feel as if your job is "killing" you? Experts say it may be harming your health, especially if you're frustrated at not being able to make decisions.

Researchers writing in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine say men surveyed who claimed they had high-strain jobs had significantly higher blood pressure both at work and at home than their low-strain counterparts.

The researchers surveyed more than 285 male workers in New York and recorded their blood pressures at 15-minute intervals over a 240-hour period. Measurements were repeated in 195 of the men three years later.

They were questioned about their freedom to make decisions on the job and the level of time-pressure demands put on them. Researchers say men who went from high-strain-jobs to low-strain positions realized a definite decrease in blood pressure. "In fact, their follow-up blood pressure readings were quite similar to those of men who had never been in a high-strain job," researchers say.
