Published in the "American Journal of Hypertension," the study notes that erection and early lubrication both occur in the arousal stage of sexual activity. Vaginal dryness and lack of lubrication in women, the authors indicate, may be somewhat analogous to erectile dysfunction in men.
Results of this study are compelling in that they raise questions such as: What percentage of women who take hypertension drugs experience lack of lubrication during sexual encounters? And how carefully are physicians monitoring the side effects of hypertension drugs in their female patients?
Physicians need to understand that in addition to their male patients, their female patients may also suffer sexual side effects from hypertension drugs, which should be a point of discussion they have with everyone they're prescribing to.
