Hiddent Home Dangers

Sure, your home is your refuge. But it's also a potential obstacle course where you can injure yourself with seemingly innocuous materials.

Slipping, falling and colliding with objects account for the largest number of accidents at home, according to a survey by Britain's ministry of industry. Carpets and house slippers top the list of hazards.

Even the most low-tech item can trip you up. For instance, the ministry's report cited that scotch tape, envelopes, handkerchiefs and hand calculators are among the articles that brought people to the emergency room. The survey didn't explain how these items, along with coffee cups, underwear and toilet paper, could cause accidents, but they did.

"The home is a hidden epidemic," said a spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. "There is a never-ending list of ways to harm yourself at home, and it is astonishing to see the kinds of accidents that can result from the most seemingly harmless of items."
