Handling Interfaith Holiday Dilemmas

As interfaith marriages have increased, so have dilemmas concerning holiday celebrations. The Dovetail Institute for Interfaith Family Resources wants to show blended families how to celebrate both Passover and Easter in the same home.

"Afikomen and Easter Eggs! Spring Holidays in the Interfaith Family" passes on advice from interfaith couples, searches out common themes in the two celebrations and gives suggestions for supporting and enjoying a spouse's faith celebration while also respecting your own religion.

This year, the eight days of Passover begin at sundown March 31, intersecting with Easter on April 4.

"For interfaith families, the spring holidays may be more difficult than the 'December dilemma,'" says Dovetail's Joan Hawxhurst. Whereas Christmas and Hanukkah share concepts such as a miracle and overcoming great odds, theological differences are more pronounced this time of year, raising often difficult issues. Advice at the site is designed to deal with such problems, Hawxhurst says.
