Rich in antioxidants, green tea also appears to be an effective fat-burning food. Scientists at the University of Geneva in Switzerland recently discovered that men who consumed a green tea extract with meals, which equaled a daily intake of six to eight cups, burned about 80 more calories a day than did those taking caffeine capsules or a placebo.
Researchers speculate that flavonoids in the tea help activate fat oxidation, the process that turns fat into energy. In past studies, green tea flavonoids have shown promise in helping to reduce the risk of cancer and heart disease, and relieve arthritis symptoms. Various types of green tea blends are available in supermarkets, health food stores and specialty food shops.
