Giving Is in the Air
More Americans than ever -- 79 percent -- will donate cash or gifts to the needy over this holiday season, a survey says.
The Maritz AmeriPoll says that's 8 percent more than last year. Those most generous were in the 45 to 64 age group.
The average cash or equivalent donation will be $64, the poll says. Men tend to give a little more at an average of $66, with women donating $61. Ninety percent of people making $45,000 to $65,000 plan charitable gifts, the survey says.
As the likelihood of giving increases with age, so does the likelihood of attendance at Christmas services. Seven out of 10 Americans plan to attend services on Christmas Eve or Day. Seventy-three percent of people age 65 and older plan to attend.
