For many of us, autumn's cool breezes and falling leaves also mean a seasonal change in our complexions. Around this time of year, midlife skin often feels drier and may tend to flake; this flake factor is exacerbated by the drying effects of heated rooms and car heaters.
Skincare products that work well on summer skin, such as those containing alpha hydroxy acids or AHAs, may be too harsh on skin once the seasons change. "Although AHA products will help fade brown spots and make skin look smoother, they may also be too drying for some people," says Ronald Moy, M.D., a cosmetic surgeon and associate clinical professor at UCLA.
If your skin is flaking, Dr. Moy recommends experimenting with moisturizers (all should contain an SPF of at least 15) for day and a rich cream or lotion for night. There are many age-specific products available at supermarkets, department stores, and beauty supply shops.
Another option is to use gentle face and body care products that are derived solely from natural ingredients. "Using essential oil blends helps retain moisture in the skin and helps improve elasticity and skin tone," says Michelle Ornstein, owner of Enessa Aromatherapy day spa in Los Angeles.
Ornstein, a European-trained aromatherapist and licensed aesthetician, caters to skin-conscious celebrities such as Helen Hunt, Kirstie Alley, Lesley Anne Warren, and Natalie Cole. According to Ornstein, they all use essential oil-based products from Enessa's skin and body care line.
An essential oil-based product such as Enessa's rose oil eye wrinkle treatment contains rose, geranium, lavender and ylang ylang oils. "This is a soothing, rejuvenating, antiseptic and relaxing blend," Ornstein says.
Essential oil-based face and body care products are available at many health food stores, department stores and beauty supply shops nationwide. Another autumn skin care tip from Ornstein: You can keep your skin in shape by drinking at least eight glasses of water a day, as well as by cutting down on caffeine, which dries the skin, and drinking more herbal teas.
