Get the Proper Rest

Getting the proper rest is essential to living well and long. When you put your head on the pillow at night, do you get the sleep you need? Or do you struggle to nod off or wake up in the middle of the night and stare at the ceiling until dawn?

Sleep experts at Stanford University say How to Sleep Well is matter of following a few simple routines -- like going to bed at about the same time every night and rising at the same time every morning. Among other suggestions, they recommend regular exercise to reduce tension and relax the mind. But finish your workout at least five to six hours before bedtime to give your body time to cool down.

Get into a slow-down routine -- read, write in a journal, do some relaxation exercises or meditate. A hot shower about half an hour before settling down will increase body temperature and signal the brain that it's time for sleep, and you're more likely to have more deep sleep.

Make sure your bedroom is conducive to sleep -- comfortable bed, temperature set between 65 and 75 degrees and all lights out. You might also try aromatherapy or so-called "white noise" -- soothing sounds such as the quiet hum of a fan or a recording of waves lapping at the shore or soft classical music.
