Get a Break on College Texts

Baby boomers and other mature adults considering returning to college campuses for serious education or just expanding those horizons may want to consider those that reduce up-front textbook costs.

Big Words, the online alternative to the campus bookstore, has college texts for both sale and rent. Search the database by the author or title of the textbook you want. A site spokesman says credit cards are accepted and there's no tax -- except in California.

If you choose, Big Books will send you a used, but serviceable copy of the textbook. Rent a book for a year and get 40 percent of its cost back when you return it in decent condition.

If a friend uses the service, you get a credit on your next purchase, the spokesman says. E-mail queries are welcome.
