Foreign Waters: Some Protection Tips

Sure, avoiding drinking the local water is one way to avoid getting sick on a trip abroad. But the devil may be in the details, says the Centers for Disease Control.

Beverages from a can or bottle are your best bet in protecting yourself from germs causing diarrhea -- but make sure any surface of the container is wiped off before putting it in your mouth, the CDC warns.

Boiling water vigorously or drinking such beverages as tea or coffee made from boiled water also can reduce your chances of getting ill.

But watch out for the little details such as ice or water used to brush your teeth, the CDC says. Even in these small amounts contaminated water can lead to diarrhea and bouts of dysentery. For more insurance, buy some water purification products at your local retailer before setting out on that trip.
