Fit Footwear is Foremost

Jogging and running are two of the most popular exercises to keep your body in shape -- but the wrong footwear can ruin it all by causing permanent damage. Podiatrists say it is vital your sports shoes are fit to take the pace.

Experts at Feet for Life advise checking the tread on the sole, because if the pattern has worn away, your protection will be reduced. Check also to see if there is more wear and tear on one side than on the other, because this could affect your posture.

Examine the mid-sole, which is usually the white, spongier section of the shoe. If the mid-sole is creased and flattened, there is not much support for feet and legs. One expert says "this is often the area to wear out first."

If the upper fabric seems to slant in one direction, it could be a sign that your foot is leaning too far in or out, which could leave you open to injury. And take out the insole to see if it is worn away at the ball of the foot or at the heel -- "another sign that your trainers have had their day."
