Easing Computer Eye Strain

Medical experts say special glasses with tinted shades may be just what's needed to prevent eye strain while sitting in front of the PC for long periods.

If your eyes become dry or sore or your vision starts to blur, Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) may be taking its toll. The symptoms normally disappear once you turn the PC off, but CVS has been linked to diminished productivity and a reduced sense of well being.

Other CVS symptoms include contact lens discomfort, tearing and difficulty in changing focus. Special glasses offering mid-range field of vision -- instead of close and far-range fields offered by most multi-focal glasses -- can minimize the symptoms.

Tinting, by filtering out unwanted effects of such colors as the blues in fluorescent lighting, also can alleviate eye strain. The most common tints, pink and gray, filter out unwanted colors with minimal distortion.
