"I am off on my Labor Day weekend beach vacation, but am worried all that sun, sea and sand may take its toll on my hair. Please help."
This week, our expert is Erica Bassett, manager of the Contemporary Marske hair salon.
"Hair has no natural defences, so exposure to UV rays depletes its natural oils and moisture levels. Add to that the sand and salt from the sea and you are talking lank locks, breakage and split ends," she says.
"Sun can dehydrate your hair just as much as the rest of you but there are ways you can keep your locks in good condition ... even on [vacation]."
- Think about it before you go and meet the battle head on! Make sure your hair is in good condition and looking its best before you set off.
- Colored hair is more vulnerable to sun, water and humidity, so plan ahead and have your hair done as far in advance as possible.
- Take a head scarf or a hat with you -- and wear it! This will not only protect your scalp from burning, but will help a little in preventing colored hair from fading due to the bleaching effects of the sun.
- If you have been swimming, remember to rinse the sea salt or pool chlorine out of your hair with plenty of fresh water.
- It is worth investing in some good products to take with you. You can buy hair care ranges specifically designed to help keep your hair looking good in the sun. L'Oreal Serie Expert has a solar range which includes a cleansing shampoo and a nourishing mask. Massage your conditioner into your hair and scalp really well ... that way you'll know you've got it covered. Your hair and scalp will feel the benefits and you'll get a soft, smooth finish.
